Local Services Ads are Google listings that sit above regular search ads and charge you per lead, not per click. To earn the Google Guaranteed badge, a business passes a license, insurance, and background check. Customers call or message straight from the ad. You can also dispute leads that do not qualify.

The problem
Local Services Ads look simple enough that most owners set them up themselves, then leave them alone. Two things go wrong. First, verification stalls because a license number, an insurance certificate, or a background check for one of the owners never got finished, so the listing sits unverified for months. Second, nobody disputes the junk leads. Wrong service, wrong area, spam calls, and price shoppers who hung up all get billed at full rate, and the monthly cost per real job quietly doubles.
What it is
Local Services Ads are a separate Google product from Google Ads. They have their own dashboard, their own billing, and their own ranking rules. To verify, you need a business license and general liability insurance that meets Google's minimum. Google also runs background checks on the business and often on the owner. Once you are verified you get the green Google Guaranteed checkmark. Ranking comes from review count and score inside the LSA profile. It also comes from how close you are to the searcher, your listed hours, how fast you answer, and how well you handled past leads. We handle setup, verification chasing, budget, job type selection, and weekly lead disputes.

- Business hours and lead response settings tuned to your call handling

Our process
Eligibility and Document Gathering
Days 1 to 7We check that your trade is eligible in your county, confirm your license is active with the state board, and collect a certificate of insurance that meets Google's coverage minimum. Missing paperwork is the number one reason verification stalls.
Verification and Background Checks
Week 1 to 5We submit the business and owner background checks through Google's screening vendor and track them until they clear. This step is out of our hands on timing and usually takes two to five weeks, sometimes longer during backlogs.
Profile Build and Budget Set
Week 2 to 3We select job types, draw the service area by zip code, set your hours, upload photos, and set a weekly budget tied to a target lead count. Job types you do not want are switched off so you are not charged for them.
Lead Dispute Routine
Weekly, ongoingEvery week we review each charged lead for wrong service, wrong area, spam, or a customer who never engaged, and file disputes within Google's window. Credits typically land within a week or two.
Ranking Work
Ongoing, monthlyWe push review volume inside the LSA profile, tighten response times, and adjust hours and budget based on which job types are actually converting to work.
Realistic timeline: Verification usually takes two to five weeks and is controlled by Google, not by us. Leads start within days of going live. Ranking position improves over two to three months as LSA reviews accumulate.
What the Verification Clock Actually Looks Like
Verification is a chain, and every link waits on the one before it. Knowing the order tells you where an application is stuck.
Ads can start running before the badge appears. The badge is what lifts your click through rate, so the last step is worth chasing.
Paperwork That Stalls a Google Guaranteed Application
Nearly every stalled application we take over is stuck on a document, not on a decision. Check these before you apply.
Certificate names your exact legal entity
Must match the license and profile
General liability meets Google's minimum
The amount varies by job category
Policy is current, not expiring next month
A short window means doing it twice
State license is active and unrestricted
Confirm with the CSLB first
Owner name matches the government ID
Missing middle initials get rejected
Address matches your Google Business Profile
Mismatches trigger a manual review
Screening emails reach a monitored inbox
Vendor mail often lands in spam
Disputing a Lead So It Actually Gets Credited
Google credits leads that meet its rules. Most disputes fail on wording and timing, not on merit.
Do this
- File inside Google's dispute window, which is why we review leads weekly
- Use Google's own reasons: wrong service, wrong area, spam, or no contact made
- Quote the caller's actual words from the recording
- Include the zip code when the job sits outside your service area
- Keep a running log of what got credited and what did not
Not this
- Do not dispute a real customer who chose another company
- Do not dispute a price shopper who asked a fair question
- Do not save a month of disputes for one sitting and miss the window
- Do not leave the reason blank or write only bad lead
- Do not switch off a job type instead of disputing, unless you truly do not do that work
How Local Services Ads and Search Ads Share One Budget
These are not two options to choose between. They stack. On a phone, Local Services Ads sit at the very top, then paid search, then the map pack, then organic results. A business running all of them can hold three spots on one screen.
Lead volume in Local Services Ads is capped by demand, so it rarely absorbs a whole budget. A common starting split for a home service company is 30 to 40 percent of paid spend into Local Services Ads and the rest into search. After 60 days we move money based on cost per booked job, not on which product feels newer.
The big limit is control. You pick job types, not keywords. That is fine for drain cleaning. It is a problem when you want to push one specialty, like tankless conversions, because the category will send you every water heater lead there is. Search campaigns are where you steer.
One more difference changes how you staff the phones. A Local Services lead is often a live call ringing right now, not a form you answer tomorrow. If nobody picks up inside two rings during business hours, the product charges you for the lead and quietly ranks you lower for slow response. It is the only channel where the receptionist is a ranking factor.
