Services and description optimization means building out the services list and business description on a Google Business Profile so both match how customers really search. Each service can carry its own description. The business description gives you 750 characters to explain what the company does, who it serves, and where.

The problem

Two fields on almost every profile sit empty or half filled. The services list is often three generic entries pulled automatically from the category, and the description is either blank or a paragraph of marketing language that says the business is dedicated to excellence. Neither helps anyone. The result is a profile that Google understands only in broad strokes and a searcher who cannot tell whether you do the specific thing they need.

What it is

The services section lets you list every service you offer. You pick entries from Google's predefined list or type your own. Each one can carry a description of up to 300 characters. Those entries add relevance for terms your category alone does not cover. They also show in the Services tab, where a searcher can scan them. The business description is a separate 750 character field that shows in some views of the profile. It should say plainly what you do, the areas you cover, and what makes you the right call. Nothing in it should read like a brochure. Google bans promotional content, links, and offers in the description, so it has to be written to that rule.

Signs you need this

  • Your services list has three entries Google generated for you
  • Your business description is blank or reads like a mission statement
  • You offer a profitable service that appears nowhere on your profile
  • Customers call asking whether you do work that you clearly do
  • Your website lists twelve services and your profile lists two

What is included

  • Complete services list built from your real service menu and search data
  • Custom service entries for anything Google's predefined list is missing
  • Individual 300 character descriptions written for each priority service
  • Business description written to 750 characters within Google's content rules
  • Service ordering so the highest value work sits at the top
  • Alignment between profile services and the service pages on your site
  • Price or price range fields completed where your category supports them
  • Quarterly refresh as your service mix changes

Our process

  1. Inventory your real services

    Week 1

We start from your invoices and your price book, not from a keyword tool. Every service you actually sell gets listed, then flagged by revenue and margin so we know what to feature first.

  2. Match to search language

    Week 1 to 2

Customers do not use trade terms. They search for AC not blowing cold air, not evaporator coil diagnostics. We cross reference your list against Search Console queries and Google's predefined service names so entries match real phrasing.

  3. Write the service descriptions

    Week 2 to 3

Each priority service gets a 300 character description that explains what is included, roughly how long it takes, and what a customer should expect. Filler burns the character budget, so every sentence has to earn its space.

  4. Write the business description

    Week 3

750 characters covering what you do, who you serve, the cities you cover, and one concrete reason to call. No links, no offers, no superlatives, since Google's guidelines prohibit promotional content in this field.

  5. Align and refresh

    Every 3 months

Profile services get cross checked against the service pages on your website so the two tell the same story. Every quarter we review for services you dropped and new ones you added.

Realistic timeline: Complete build in 2 to 3 weeks. Services entries typically appear on the profile within hours. Any relevance effect on rankings develops over 3 to 8 weeks and is smaller than a category change.

Predefined Services and Custom Services Are Not the Same

When you add a service, Google offers a list tied to your categories. Those are predefined services. Anything the list does not have, you type yourself, and that becomes a custom service.

Take the predefined match whenever one exists and it is honest. Those are standard entries Google already recognizes, and they attach cleanly to the category you chose. Type a custom entry only when nothing on the list comes close to the work.

Custom entries are where profiles get sloppy. Emergency AC Repair Chino is not a service, it is a keyword pushed into a field. Write it as Emergency AC Repair and let your service area and the description carry the location. Stuffed entries look obvious to a customer reading the tab, and they add nothing Google was not already going to figure out.

Trade Words Versus What Customers Type

The service entry should use the customer's words. Your trade term still belongs on the profile, just one line down in the description.

One test: would a homeowner type this into a phone at ten at night? If not, it is a description, not an entry.

What Belongs in 300 Characters

Three hundred characters is about 50 words. That is enough for five short facts and nothing else, so every line has to earn its place.

  • What is actually included

    Parts, labor, cleanup, or not

  • How long it usually takes

    One visit or two days

  • What it costs to start

    A range beats saying nothing

  • Who it is for

    Homes, businesses, or both

  • One specific detail

    A brand, method, or warranty

  • The plain name of the fix

    Words a customer would use

  • No links, offers, or phone numbers

Those belong elsewhere on the profile

The First Six Entries Do Most of the Work

Nobody scrolls forty services. On a phone, the services tab shows a handful before a customer has to tap for more, and most of them never tap. So the order of the list matters as much as the length of it.

Put the work you want more of, and the work with the better margin, in the first six. Then reorder with the season. Air conditioning entries move up in May and heating moves up in October. It takes about ten minutes twice a year.

The other half of the job is pruning. Services you dropped two years ago still generate calls, and every one of those calls costs your office time and ends in a no. Deleting an entry does not harm the profile or reset anything. If you do not sell it today, take it off the list today.

Two Things People Get Wrong Here

Does the business description show up everywhere?

No, and that surprises people. It appears in some views of the profile and not others, and on many phone layouts a searcher has to tap into the About section to read a word of it. Write it well anyway, but do not treat it as your headline. Category, services, photos, and reviews are what nearly everyone sees first.

Can I paste my website copy into the description?

You can, but it almost never survives the trim. Website copy carries links, offers, and superlatives, and Google's rules for this field do not allow promotional content. The 750 character limit is roughly 120 words, which is one solid paragraph. Rewriting from scratch is faster than cutting a page down.

Frequently asked questions

Does the services list actually affect rankings?

It contributes to relevance, especially for specific searches your category does not cover on its own. The effect is real but smaller than the primary category. Treat it as both a ranking helper and a conversion tool, since searchers do scan the services tab when deciding whether to call.

Can I put keywords in my business description?

Use them naturally, the way you would describe the business to a customer. Google's guidelines prohibit promotional content, links, and misleading claims, and a keyword stuffed description can be removed or contribute to a suspension. Write it for a person reading it and the keywords fall in on their own.

How many services should I list?

Every service you genuinely offer, which for most trades is fifteen to forty entries. Do not list services you cannot deliver to catch more searches. Order matters more than count: put your highest value and most searched services at the top since that is what people scan first.

Should the profile services match my website exactly?

They should tell the same story, though they do not need identical wording. If your profile lists a service, the website should have a page or section covering it, because customers who click through expect to find it. Mismatches make you look disorganized and waste the click.

Do I add prices to the services?

Only if you can stand behind them. Some categories support price and price range fields, and showing an honest starting price filters out shoppers who were never going to buy. For trades where every job is different, a range with a diagnostic fee works better than a single number that will be wrong.
