A Google Business Profile audit is a field by field review of a listing, checked against Google's guidelines and against the profiles ranking in the map pack today. It scores categories, services, description, photos, hours, attributes, reviews, and questions. Then it gives you a fix list, ordered by the expected impact of each item.

The problem

Owners look at their Google business profile and see a listing that seems fine. The problems are the ones you cannot see without comparison: your primary category is a broader label than every business ranking above you, four of your listed services duplicate each other, your photos are three years old, your business name has a keyword appended that is a suspension risk, and the top answer in your questions section is wrong. None of that is visible without going field by field and checking it against what actually ranks.

What it is

The audit is a one time diagnostic that covers the Google business profile only, not the whole website. We score every field. The business name gets checked against your legal name and your signage. Primary and secondary categories get checked against the pack leaders. We look at how complete the services list is and how it is worded. The description gets checked against the character limit and the content rules. Then come hours, holiday hours, and the attributes available for your category. We compare photo count and recency against similar businesses, and we check whether you have video at all. We read post history and cadence, question and answer accuracy, review count, rating, velocity, and response rate. We also run a geogrid, so the findings sit next to real visibility data. We flag anything that risks suspension.

Signs you need this

  • You are outranked by businesses with fewer reviews and worse work
  • You are considering hiring a marketing company and want a baseline
  • Your Google business profile was set up years ago and never reviewed
  • You received a Google warning or a temporary suspension
  • Calls from your listing dropped and nothing obvious changed

What is included

  • Field by field scorecard with pass, fail, or improve on each item
  • Category comparison against the top ten profiles in your target city
  • Suspension risk flags with the specific guideline each one touches
  • Photo and video count compared against category averages
  • Review count, rating, velocity, and response rate benchmarked to competitors
  • Question and answer accuracy review
  • Geogrid visibility scan for your top five keywords
  • Prioritized fix list with effort and expected impact on each item
  • Screenshot evidence for every finding
  • Forty five minute walkthrough call with recording

Our process

  1. Access and capture

    Days 1 to 2

We take a full record of the current profile state, field by field, with screenshots. This becomes the reference point, and it is also what lets us detect unauthorized edits later.

  2. Guideline compliance check

    Days 2 to 4

Every field gets checked against Google's current representing your business guidelines. Business name, address type, hours accuracy, and duplicate listings are the four that cause most suspensions, so those get the closest look.

  3. Competitor benchmarking

    Days 3 to 6

The top ten profiles for your main keywords get the same field extraction: categories, review counts and velocity, photo counts, post cadence. That produces the gap analysis showing where you are behind.

  4. Visibility scan

    Days 5 to 7

A geogrid across your service area shows the practical result of the current setup. Findings mean more when you can see the map showing exactly where the Google business profile stops appearing.

  5. Score, prioritize, present

    Days 7 to 10

Findings get scored and ordered by impact versus effort, written into the report with evidence, and delivered on a walkthrough call so you can ask questions and decide what to fix first.

Realistic timeline: Seven to ten business days from access to walkthrough call. Most findings can be fixed within two weeks of delivery. Ranking effects from the fixes follow the normal 2 to 6 week window for relevance changes.

How the scorecard is weighted

Every field gets checked, but not every field carries the same weight. The fix list is ordered by what actually moves visibility and calls.

Weight is about impact, not effort. Two of the high weight fixes take about five minutes each.

How the fix list gets ordered

Findings get sorted on two things: how much they move calls, and how long they take. Anything that puts the listing at risk jumps the line no matter how small it is. A city name sitting inside your business name is a ten minute edit that protects everything else you own.

Next come fast changes with real weight. Primary category, hours, the services list, a missing booking link. After that comes the slow work that compounds: reviews, monthly photos, posts, questions. That order matters, because the slow work takes months and should start in week one.

We also cut findings on purpose. A sixty item list looks thorough and wastes your time. If an item would not change a call, a ranking, or a risk, it does not go on the list. You should be able to hand the report to a helper and have them work straight down it.

What to have ready before the audit starts

Gather these first and the audit runs in a week instead of three. Most of it is one email to your office.

  • Manager access to the profile

An email invite, never your password

  • Your exact legal business name

As it reads on the state registration

  • Real hours, including the odd ones

Half days, on call nights, closures

  • The five searches you most want to win

The ones that pay, not the vanity ones

  • Target cities in priority order

Ranked by drive time, not city limits

  • A current service list with prices or ranges

    Straight from your invoices

  • Any Google emails or warnings you received

Even ones staff ignored months ago

  • Search Console access if you have it

    Optional, sharpens the keyword findings

A keyword sitting in a business name can go unnoticed for years. Then one review of the listing, and the profile is gone on a Tuesday morning.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a full local SEO audit?

This one covers the Google Business Profile only, which is faster and cheaper. A full local SEO audit also covers your website, technical health, citations, backlinks, and content. If your website is fine and the profile is the weak point, the profile audit is the right scope. If you are unsure, start here.

Will you tell me if I am at risk of suspension?

Yes, and it is one of the most valuable parts. Keyword stuffed business names, address type mismatches, hours that do not reflect reality, and duplicate listings are common in profiles set up by well meaning owners. Finding these before Google does is far cheaper than a reinstatement appeal.

Do you fix the problems as part of the audit?

No, the audit is diagnosis only, which keeps it honest. You get a fix list detailed enough to hand to anyone. Many clients handle the easy items themselves and bring us in for the rest. If you hire us for implementation, the audit fee gets credited to the first month.

How often should I audit the profile?

Annually for most businesses, or right after any significant change: a move, a rebrand, a phone number change, a suspension, or a sudden drop in calls. Google also changes guidelines and features throughout the year, so a yearly review catches things that were fine when you set them up.

Can you audit a profile you do not have access to?

Partially. Public fields, categories, photos, posts, reviews, and questions are all visible from the outside, and the geogrid works without access. What we cannot see is the performance data and internal settings. An external audit still catches most issues, and we say clearly which sections were limited.
