Digital Marketing for Law Firms
Signed cases and case value are the only real scoreboard
Call (714) 823-3164 or ask a question. Clear recommendations, even if we never work together.
Law firm marketing is judged on signed cases, not traffic. Practice area decides everything. A personal injury firm competes on paid search and reviews. An estate planning firm wins with content and referrals. State bar advertising rules limit what you can promise, so credibility has to do the selling.

What usually goes wrong
- Personal injury clicks in Southern California cost more than many businesses spend in a week
- Bar rules govern advertising claims and referral arrangements, so nothing can be written loosely
- Most calls are people who need a different practice area or have no case at all
- Intake fails after hours and the caller signs with whichever firm answered the phone
- Clients who lost a case leave reviews attacking the outcome and you cannot respond with the facts
- Large advertising firms own the billboards, the television spots, and the top of every results page
- Partners bill all day and nobody actually owns business development
What usually makes an owner start looking
- You start your own firm or leave a partnership and have no case flow
- A large case settles and you realize the pipeline behind it is empty
- You add an attorney or a practice area and need cases to support the salary
- Your cost per signed case from paid search stops making sense
- A competitor starts running heavy advertising in your county
- Referrals from other attorneys drop off after a source retires
Which channels actually matter
Not every channel deserves the same weight for law firms. This is how we would prioritise.
| Channel | Weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO | Primary | Attorney plus practice area plus city is how most people search, and local results are where a small firm can beat an advertiser with a far bigger budget. |
| Content Marketing | Primary | Plain explanations of process, timelines, and what a case is generally worth do the qualifying before the call, which raises the share of inquiries worth signing. |
| Reputation Management | Primary | People are afraid of hiring the wrong lawyer. Recent reviews about communication and responsiveness carry more weight than any award badge on a footer. |
| Pay Per Click Advertising | Secondary | Worth it when case value supports the click cost. Tight practice area targeting and heavy negative keyword work are what keep an injury or defense budget from evaporating. |
| Lead Generation Systems | Secondary | Call tracking, after hours answering, and a clean intake path decide how many of the inquiries you already get actually turn into cases. |
Seasonality
Practice area drives the pattern more than the calendar does. Family law inquiries rise in January, and again once summer vacation ends. Personal injury tracks traffic volume. It spikes around holiday weekends and during the winter rain months, when Southern California collision counts climb. Estate planning picks up at year end, and after a death inside a family circle.
What we measure
Qualified inquiries by practice area
Signed cases per month
Cost per signed case
Intake answer rate and after hours response time
Average case value by lead source
Concerns we hear
Bar rules make marketing risky.
They make careless marketing risky. No guarantees, no comparisons we cannot substantiate, required disclaimers in place, and a record of what ran and when. Written properly, an attorney site is compliant and still persuasive.
We get all our cases from attorney referrals.
Referring attorneys send clients who look you up first, and referral sources retire or change practice areas. Search visibility is the part of the pipeline you control, and it protects you the year a major source disappears.
Paid search is too expensive in our practice area.
Sometimes it is. That is why we test with tight targeting and measure cost per signed case rather than cost per click. If the math does not work in your county, we move the budget to organic and reviews and tell you plainly.
We hired an agency that promised first page rankings.
Rankings are not the product. Signed cases are. We report on qualified inquiries, signings, and case value by practice area, and we will tell you when a practice area is not worth the fight in your market.
I do not want the billboard lawyer look.
Neither do we. The firms winning right now look like professionals who explain things clearly. That is a different design and a different tone from the mass advertising approach, and it converts better with the clients you actually want.

Where we serve this industry
Practice Area Changes the Entire Plan
There is no single law firm marketing plan. What works for a defense attorney is wasted money for an estate planner.
| Practice area | How people search | Where the money goes | Realistic timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal injury | Urgent searches, often days after the crash | Reviews, local search, tight ad targeting | 6 to 12 months organically |
| Family law | Weeks of quiet reading before a first call | Content and reviews | 4 to 8 months |
| Estate planning | Life events, then careful research | Content, seminars, referral relationships | 4 to 8 months |
| Criminal defense | Right now, often from a phone at night | Local search, live answering, speed | Intake first, then search |
| Employment | Long research and heavy comparison | Content and clear case screening | 6 to 12 months |
| Business and immigration | Process questions and requirement checks | Content and clean service pages | 4 to 8 months |
Timelines assume a site with no existing authority in a competitive Southern California county.
Fix Intake Before You Raise the Ad Budget
Most firms already pay for more calls than they sign. Work this list before you add a dollar of spend.
Listen to twenty recorded calls from last month
You will find the leak in one afternoon.
Count how many calls ring past four rings
That number is often the whole problem.
Decide who answers between 6pm and 8am
A service that takes details beats voicemail.
Write a screening script for the first ninety seconds
Case type, date, county, and injury or not.
Set a reply time standard for web forms
Under fifteen minutes during business hours.
Track answered, qualified, consulted, and signed
Four numbers, one row per month.
Add negative keywords for work you refuse
Bankruptcy searches drain an injury budget.
Cost Per Signed Case Is the Only Number That Matters
Cost per click tells you almost nothing about a law firm. Two firms paying the same per click can end the month in completely different places.
Do the chain yourself. Take one month of spend, divide by calls, then by qualified calls, then by consultations, then by signed cases. The final number is what a case cost you.
Now compare that to the average fee for that case type in your firm. A signed estate plan and a signed injury case can differ by a factor of fifty, so they support very different budgets.
This is also how you decide to quit something. If a practice area cannot produce a case for less than it earns in your county, the honest answer is to move that money to content and reviews and say so out loud.
Reviews Under Bar Rules
Reviews matter more than any badge in a footer. Confidentiality still applies when a former client attacks you in public.
Do this
- Ask every client at the moment a matter closes well
- Ask by text with a direct link, not with a printed card
- Reply to negative reviews in three sentences or fewer
- Build enough recent reviews that one outlier sits below the fold
Not this
- Do not confirm that someone was ever a client of the firm
- Do not correct the record with any case fact, ever
- Do not offer anything of value in exchange for a review
- Do not argue with a review written by an opposing party
